Books and Beyond
Books and Beyond is a recreational reading program designed to encourage students to read outside the classroom. Students in grades TK, K, 1stand 2ndwill be eligible to participate. Students may read or be read to by another person. Reading material can include books, newspapers, magazines, poems, and recreational reading assigned as homework. Books and Beyond reading material should not include worksheets assigned for homework.
Books and Beyond will start September 23thand will continue through May 15th.
Reading logs are available in the classrooms. Each reading log represents one Books and Beyond level, which is 3 hours for TK-1st grade and 4 hours for 2nd grade. Each log must be complete and signed by a parent or guardian and returned to the classroom. The second grade teachers require that the students fill out the forms themselves.
Prizes will be awarded throughout the year for each level completed up to level 20. Students who reach level 5 by January 31st will have the opportunity to “Read with the Principal.” These students will be scheduled to read with Principal Cobb in the Reading Garden, each month.
Participants who reach level 20 by May 15th will be recognized at the end of year assembly.
Each classroom will have a Books and Beyond parent volunteer. The volunteer will post an envelope to collect the log sheets, keep a record of the levels reached, and distribute the prizes each week.
Since our budget is small, we are also very grateful for any prize donations (pencils, rulers, toys, etc.). Please let me know if you would like to contribute.
